Report: Megan Rapinoe to Play for Olympique Lyonnais Féminine Next Year

Bad news for Portland fans as it appears that Rapinoe could spend the majority of 2013 in France and not with the Portland Thorns.

According to a report by Redding.com, it appears as if star USWNT midfielder, Megan Rapinoe, has taken a contract with French side Olympique Lyonnais Féminine for 6 months starting in January. This would spell bad news for those of us here in Portland who were expecting to see her don the green and... red, I think, next April for the new women's team here in Portland.

According to the report, her father is quoted as saying:

"The French team has shown great interest in her and offered her a nice contract," her dad said. "She always wanted to play abroad."

The article then mentions the city of Lyon, helping to figure out the name of the club as well.

Of course, a six month contract means that Rapinoe could still come back to play in the NWSL in June, provided there are no contract extensions offered, but it simply wouldn't be the same. Not only would she miss the home opener, but she would likely only be able to play during the last month or so of the league considering its schedule is greatly shortened over that of MLS.

All in all, bad news for those of us who were really excited at seeing a Rapinoe lead Portland Thorns FC midfield. Here's hoping the report is missing some details.

As always, this is not confirmed by either Rapinoe, or Olympique Lyonnais Féminine so take it for what it is.

What do you think of Rapinoe playing for Lyon instead of Portland?
