Portland Timbers Announce the Retention of Eleven Players

In addition, the Timbers officially declined the contract option for Steven Smith, confirming the unofficial reports on Monday.

The Portland Timbers have finalized new contracts for three players -- Jake Gleeson, Ryan Kawulok, and Rodney Wallace. While Kawulok and Gleeson hardly seemed in doubt, the presence of Wallace's name on the Re-Entry Draft list raised questions about his future. The terms of the new contracts are not immediately available.

In addition, the Timbers have exercised options on eight players:

  • Joe Bendik
  • Futty Danso
  • Chris Taylor
  • Eric Alexander
  • Kalif Alhassan
  • Sal Zizzo
  • Bright Dike
  • Brent Richards

The press release also makes specific reference to ten players already "under contract for the 2013 campaign." They are

  • Donovan Ricketts
  • David Horst
  • Andrew Jean-Baptiste
  • Hanyer Mosquera
  • Diego Chara
  • Jack Jewsbury
  • Darlington Nagbe
  • Franck Songo'o
  • Kris Boyd
  • Sebastian Rincon

With Michael Harrington and Will Johnson added to the list, that makes 23 players currently secure on the roster.

None of this information guarantees these players' place on the Timbers roster come spring, of course. But the news release clarifies the roster after a week of upheaval, giving Timbers fans a little more of an idea of what the team will look like in March.

Also worth noting, the press release left three current roster members unmentioned -- Mike Fucito, Danny Mwanga, and Jose Adolfo Valencia -- but this omission is not necessarily meaningful either.
