Bad news for Portland Timbers forward Bright Dike as it appears he will not be traveling with his national team to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. This is probably especially harsh after Dike made headlines, at least here in the United States, with a great goal against a Carles Puyol lead Catalonian team. While the final list has yet to be revealed, Dike took to Twitter to confirm his return to Portland.
Disappointed not to make the squad, Thanks for the opportunity and the new memories. A great experience that will make me a better player.
The unfortunate truth is that Dike did not come from a European league game and, as such, was not as highly valued. Also on the Nigeria national team's roster in the attacking position was Victor Moses from Chelsea, Ikechukwu Uche from Villareal and Ahmed Musa and Emmanuel Emenike both from the Russian Premier League. Despite his goal, it would be hard to argue against players who arguably face tougher competition over all.
Still, it was a great run for Dike and a solid effort all around. He might not make the Africa Cup of Nations this time around, but he certainly gained some great international experience and should be back in Portland in time for the January training camp.
