The CONCACAF Gold Cup is played every two years and to secure a spot in the Gold Cup teams from the Caribbean and Central America have to play well in their respective sub tournaments. The United States, Mexico and even Canada automatically qualify because they are they only three teams that make up the North American Zone.
The qualification process is one reason why Rodney Wallace is currently not at the Timbers' preseason training camp as he is currently playing for Costa Rica in the Copa Centroamericana.
