Another match against Real Salt Lake and another match in which the Portland Timbers looked utterly incapable of pulling out a result. The Timbers, who came into the match on a ten game unbeaten run, put in a performance that started and finished strong, but was disjointed through most of the match.
It has been a while since we had to struggle to pick out a decent performance, but we managed it. Here are our pick for the Man of the Match:
Will - Darlington Nagbe
The only regularly dangerous player for the Timbers on the night, Nagbe looked like he was inches from taking the game game over. Unfortunately, he was just as isolated as every other Timbers player and the moments sputtered out before they could gain any traction. Still, it was the best of a bad bunch and should be recognized as such.
Ryan - Frederic Piquionne
I am not sure there is a man of the match but if I have to pick one then it is Frederic Piquionne. His goal gave Portland a shred of hope going into the second leg and this by itself is worthy of MOTM. Hopefully Portland can hold on to that hope and let it foster into confidence for the next two weeks.
Stacey - Will Johnson
I really don't feel like anyone earned this, but at least Will Johnson scored and he mostly played hard, albeit often ineffectively.
