Rauwshan McKenzie joined the Portland Timbers in May while the team was experiencing a bit of a center back crisis after injuries to David Horst and Mikael Silvestre.
2012 Rank: N/A
McKenzie made just a single league appearance for the Timbers in 2013 which was, unfortunately, the rather disastrous 4-2 road loss to Real Salt Lake in August. It wasn't a great way to make his league debut. He looked nervous at times and was lacking chemistry with the rest of the back line (not that they were at their best either). He did put in good shifts for the Timbers in two friendly wins and two U.S. Open Cup wins.
When a team makes an emergency signing in response to injuries, they probably aren't getting their top choice defender, and McKenzie doesn't appear to be an exception to that rule. With Futty Danso, Pa Modou Kah, and Andrew Jean-Baptiste all still on the roster--plus Mikael Silvestre hopefully returning from injury next season and the new center back the Timbers are looking for--McKenzie is going to stay pretty low on the depth chart. He is, however, relatively inexpensive and will provide decent depth if the Timbers choose to keep him around.
