2013 Portland Timbers Player Rankings #19: Alvas Powell

The young Jamaican outside back is number 19 in this year's off-season player rankings despite playing in only a handful of games.

The Portland Timbers acquired Alvas Powell on loan from Jamaican side Portmore United FC in June after he started three straight World Cup Qualifiers. Portland's loan was for two years (2013 and 2014 season) with an option to buy.

Alvas Powell came to the Timbers and was immediately dubbed the right back of the future but in his first minutes of action with the Timbers he showed exactly how far he has to improve. His reckless tackle in a friendly against Norwich City FC would have been a straight red in any other competitions and showed just how young and raw he is. Powell earned 4 starts in August and another appearance as a sub before being relegated to the game day 18 as an unused sub. His speed and attacking attributes have many people drooling over his abilities but his youth and inexperience cancel that out.

Powell could be the outside back of the future but it all depends on how well he will develop without a lot of playing time with the first team. Currently he is too raw and reckless at times to warrant frequent starts in MLS competition, however with Portland adding another competition to the schedule it opens up a lot more opportunities for him. Powell could be the starting right back at the end of 2014.
