The Portland Timbers signed Frederic Piquionne a few days before the 2013 season started in order to bring some depth and experience to the team's attack.
2012 Rank: N/A
Piquionne made several appearances as a sub and started seven matches, but arguably found the most success in theCup. Timbers fans who began watching the Open Cup match against the Wilmington Hammerheads with lingering unpleasant memories from the year before quickly had their fears put to rest when Piquionne scored an early goal and then scored three more before the halftime whistle blew. He also scored the game winner in Dallas to send the Timbers to the Semifinal.
An ankle injury kept Piquionne out through August and September, but even with less than 800 minutes of play in the regular season, Piquionne scored a goal and recorded five assists (tied with Will Johnson for third most on the team).
Piquionne's potential for 2014 may be looking a little different with the news that Ryan Johnson is looking to go abroad and Jose Valencia is most likely going on loan. The team, according to their recent press release, is in talks with Piquionne about his contract. If either Johnson or Valencia sticks around, the team may not see a need to re-sign Piquionne, but if both forwards leave it may be smart to bring him back to have the extra depth.
