Player Appreciation Thread Etiquette

With players, both popular and unpopular, leaving the Portland Timbers, it's best to remind everybody what these threads are for.

Otto Greule Jr

Yesterday we saw the Portland Timbers trade away Eric Alexander, the Timbers' leader in assists in 2013. A week before that saw Kris Boyd leave. Appreciations threads for both players will be coming soon, but before we get to that I wanted to take a moment to go over some etiquette for these threads.

In the recent past we've seen the community use these threads as a means to harshly criticize and tear down outgoing players for not contributing enough, or doing something else. Those kinds of comments aren't what the appreciation threads are for. To remind everybody what they are for, I've put together a small list:

Appreciation Thread Etiquette

  1. Be respectful to the player. Nobody is perfect.
  2. Focus on what they did well while with the club.
  3. Save harsh criticisms for other posts concerning them. It's not uncommon for these players to actually read these threads.
  4. If you have nothing nice to comment, do not comment at all.

Our reason for doing this is to celebrate players who donned the green and white. No matter how they came to us. No matter how well they performed. No matter who they are. No matter how short of time they were here. Each of them are now part of Portland Timbers history.

If you have any questions, or comments with regards to this etiquette please don't hesitate to comment here.
