Portland Timbers 2013 Roster Recap

Portland has been the most active MLS team this off season and all the changes are sometimes hard to keep up with.

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Does anyone else feel like Caleb Porter is a fan of the Extreme Makeover series? Portland' roster makeover continued since the last roster recap a little over month ago and the season is less then a month away. With the approach of the season the roster compliance date is also approaching and for last year it was March 1st for a Mid March start, which means more than likely after the tournament is when that will occur.

Changes since January 17th:

  • Possible season ending injuries to Bright Dike and Brent Richards
  • Traded for Ben Zemanski
  • Traded away Eric Alexander
  • Traded for rights to Michael Nanchoff
  • Signed Dylan Tucker-Gangnes
  • Announced Franck Songo'o is not longer part of our plans (He is currently training with Houston Dynamo)
Here is a quick estimated depth chart (this is a hybrid of a 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 diamond so there is an extra player):

I have moved all of the injured players who required major surgeries to the bottom of the depth chart. I also moved Jack Jewsbury to the bottom of the list because of the length of time he has been out and will be out. AJB looked like he cemented his play in the starting line-up unless we sign Mikael Silvstre and David Horst returns from his slight groan pull in time.

With Jack Jewsbury's injury Ben Zemanski comes to Portland as the starter as the CDM in the 4-4-2 diamond and Nanchoff, if he is signed, becomes the super sub who can play multiple positions. Some of the holes in the roster look filled, or at least patched for this season with the thought to have them filled. Portland is still thin at the outside back position and if the starters go down for a significant amount of time it could be a huge problem for Portland. However if that does happen at the very least we will learn about the younger players.

Portland has 30 players on the roster and that number includes Franck Songo'o. Bright Dike and Brent Richards could be placed on Injured reserve which would also free up 2 more roster spots. With those in mind Portland could have 3 roster spots open to sign players before the season starts.
