We like to keep up with former Portland Timbers players from time to time, especially if they made somewhat of an impact on the team, which Franck Songo'o certainly did. Unfortunately for us, he and the Portland Timbers were unable to come to terms on a new contract earlier this year. There was no official announcement. No press release issued. Just a simple tweet by Songo'o and a passing mention by Caleb Porter during training a few weeks ago. In fact, he's still listed on the Timbers' official roster!
Eventually we learned that Songo'o was trialing with the Houston Dynamo, former MLS Cup runner ups from both 2011 and 2012. While it wasn't ideal for Timbers fans, I think most of us would have liked to see him get signed and stick around in the league, especially considering his brother recently signed for Sporting Kansas City. That does not appear to be happening, however.
According to a training update released by the Houston Dynamo, the Cameroonian forward is no longer trialing with the team. No reason was given, he's just gone now. This could be so Songo'o can trial with another team, or something else entirely. What is certain, however, is that if Songo'o had agreed to a deal with Houston, they would in turn need to give the Portland Timbers something for his rights.
Such is the system that we live in under the ever convoluted eye that is Major League Soccer. It's not easy being a "free agent" here in the United States.
We hope that Songo'o ends up at a decent home. For everything that went wrong in Portland in 2012, he was one of the few bright spots.
What do you think of Songo'o latest development? Where do you think he'll ultimately end up?
