Timbers to Potentially Face Monarcas Morelia, Unnamed EPL Side in Summer Friendlies

New, comments

Timbers owner Merritt Paulson gave away the team's tentative summer friendly plans in a tweeted conversation with Soccer By Ives's Mike Donovan yesterday.

According to Paulson's tweet, the Portland Timbers could face Mexico's Morelia in early July and an English Premier League side in August.

Paulson's tweet:

EPL team likely in Aug and Morelia likely early July

An early July date likely puts the Morelia friendly on Wednesday the 3rd. With the recently announced Gold Cup doubleheader on July 9th, it seems unlikely that Jeld-Wen would hold two high profile matches in close proximity, leaving the first week of the month as the best option for the team.

There are also several potential dates for August's friendly; The Timbers have games on the 3rd and 17th of August, while the 14th is a FIFA international date, leaving a probable window between the 7th and 11th in which to schedule the team's final friendly.

Monarcas Morelia plays in the Mexican top flight, Liga MX. In the 2012-13 Apertura (the first 17 games of the season), Morelia finished in 5th place. The 2012-13 Clausura (the final 17 games of the season) has not been as kind to Morelia, however, as they currently sit in 12th place on the league table.

In 2012 the Timbers faced Valencia CF on Wednesday, 5/23, and Aston Villa on Tuesday, 7/24. In 2011 they faced AFC Ajax on 5/24, Club America on 7/7, West Bromwich-Albion on 7/20, and Independiente on 7/26.

How do you feel about these potential summer friendlies? Which EPL team would you like to see come to town?
