"Beating Seattle Never Gets Old" Benefit Hopes to Build a New Soccer Field; You Can Help

A new fundraiser has been kicked into high gear by the Operation Pitch Invasion and 107ist to help build a new field called Bless Field.

Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

It's time for a new field to be built in Portland and, with a little help from you, it could very well serve children from over 22 countries who speak 11 different languages. The field is called Bless Field and will be built in the New Columbia neighborhood in Portland, naturally.

Here are the details:

A field on which a future Timbers or Thorns star will be born

The people at Operation Pitch Invasion and the 107ist, along with some fine reporting by the guys who run the excellent 5 Minutes to Kickoff podcast, are throwing an event to help raise money for the field. About $200,000 is needed and the 107ist and Portland Timbers have already kicked in some cash to help with the effort. Where will they get the rest? Well that's up to you.

The event will be held at the Hollywood Theatre on April 4th at 7:00 pm. Tickets cost $12 in advance (through Eventbrite) or $15 at the door. In exchange for your ticket (plus anything else you can spare) you'll be treated to a night of Timbers memories. Here's what's to be included:

Come see highlights of the Timbers playing against Pele and his Cosmos in Portland in 1976; the Timbers playing the Chicago Sting at Wrigley Field in 1982; and, in an extended cut, the Timbers playing the Seattle Sounders in a playoff semifinal before a record crowd in Portland in 1975.

Commenting throughout the evening will be the players on the screen themselves, among them Willie Anderson, Bernie Fagan, Roger Goldingay, Mick Hoban, Bill Irwin, and Jimmy Kelly, along with "5MTKO" hosts Bob Kellett and Steven Lenhart.

Sounds like a great night to me and certainly worth the ticket price.

Only 350 tickets are available in total and 238 remaining of that. So if you have an open night on April 4th, a few extra bucks, and a strong desire to make soccer a more permanent fixture in Portland, here's your chance. You can read more about it or buy your ticket directly via the links below.
