Portland Thorns FC @ FC Kansas City Match Thread [5:35 pm]

The Portland Thorns open their inaugural NWSL season with an away game against FC Kansas City.

This is it. After months of planning, preparation, crest unveiling, player acquiring, and all around "getting stuff done" the league is about to kick off their inaugural match. It's a bit of a shame that it won't open with all the glory and splendor that will be Jeld-Wen Field next weekend, but it's a momentous occasion nonetheless.

There's not much for me to say about the game just yet as, well, we're just not really sure what to expect. This weekend's matches will certainly be an eye opening experience.

Final Thoughts

We're going in with pretty much no expectations for this match. While some people might have high hopes for the Thorns this season based on their attacking strength, there's actually very little indication that they'll be dominant on the field. Really it'll take a few games, for all the clubs, to really come away with a good idea of where they stand in the league. The Thorns, as with the Timbers in 2011, are a brand new roster. A few weeks in training isn't really enough to time to make a championship team. That said, unlike the Timbers, they're at least on equal footing with the rest of the league. We'll see how that works out in a few hours time.
