Sunday afternoon the Portland Timbers played Chivas USA off the pitch at Jeld-Wen Field to the tune of 3-0 thanks to goals from Rodney Wallace, Diego Valeri, and Will Johnson. The Timbers played well across the board, aided by a woeful Chivas team that seemed to be stalling for time as soon as the first whistle blew. In a game with so many excellent performances, the choice for our Man of the Match was not an easy one.
Here are our picks for the Timbers Man of the Match. Be sure to vote in the poll below and let us know your pick in the comments.
Geoff: Rodney Wallace
Wow. Wallace was already on a tear this season, but he arguably had his best game ever against Chivas USA. He was an absolute terror on that left side. The fact that he got that first goal and then an assist on the next only highlights his importance in the left winger position. I didn't use to be a big Wallace believer, but consider me a full fledged convert now.
Andy: Diego Valeri
Sunday was another one of those days when the man of the match could have gone to any number of players, particularly Rodney Wallace, who had one of his greatest games as a Timber. If I could choose two men of the match, RodWall would be co-MotM. But Valeri showed once again why he's been so important to the team's success. At times when his teammates maybe took their feet off the gas for a bit, Valeri was still winning the ball, getting into space, and making slick passes. In the end he played a part in every goal - and nearly every chance - the Timbers had.
Ryan: Diego Valeri
Valeri was like a puppet master against Chivas, he was constantly plucking and pulling the right strings. His passes unlocked Chivas' defense on so many occasions and his inch perfect through balls were such a pleasure to watch. The cherry on top was his defensive work rate and the countless times he tracked back to win the ball off of a Chivas player. He was a man on a mission to ensure three points and it elevated his teammates to a higher level. Rodney Wallace could easily be Man of the Match for being a beast.
Will: Diego Chara
While some of the Timbers have looked gassed and gotten rested during this stretch of games, Diego Chara has only gotten stronger each game. By the end of last night's match he was covering the entire right side of the pitch. At one point, Chivas broke forward with what appeared to be a man advantage. However, Chara literally closed down every pass that Chivas made until they turned over the ball and all that the Timbers defenders had to do was not be out of position. In a game with several great offensive performances, to stand out as a box to box midfielder requires a virtuoso performance, and that is what we got out of Chara against Chivas USA.
