Portland Thorns FC Call Up 3 Amateur Players for Roster Depth

With Rachel Buehler, Alex Morgan, Karina LeBlanc and Christine Sinclair all off on national team duty, the Portland Thorns have called up three extras.

NWSL teams don't have a large roster size, as has been widely reported on and criticized. So when a single team loses three impact players such as Christine Sinclair, Alex Morgan, Karina LeBlanc and Rachel Buehler to the likes of their respective national teams it hurts. Not only because those players are obviously very important, but because the Thorns are now seriously low on available players. Typically a team has 18 players ready for a typical game day, without these four they would be down to 16.

But never fear! The Thorns have remedied the situation by calling up three amateur players to play with the big league. They are Carlie Davis, Amanda Dutra, and Cris Lewis. Here's a bit about each:

Lewis, 25, is a former standout goalkeeper at Portland State University, claiming multiple program records. The Burien, Wash., native holds the Vikings all-time career records in saves (375), shutouts (17) and wins (24) following a four-year career from 2006-09. Lewis, a four-time All-Big Sky Conference selection, was named the conference's Defensive MVP as a senior in 2009.

Dutra, 22, finished her four-year career at Portland State in 2012 as the program's all-time career leader in assists (16). In 68 appearances for the Vikings from 2009-12, the Sherwood, Ore., native recorded eight goals and 16 assists. Dutra was a four-time All-Big Sky Conference pick as a midfielder, helping the Vikings to a co-regular season championship in 2012.

Davis, 22, started all 25 games during her senior season in 2012, helping Baylor to one of the more impressive seasons in school history. While serving as a key defender for the Bears, Davis was part of a 2012 squad that set the school record for most wins (19), shutouts in a season (13), fewest goals allowed (14), shots allowed (173), assists allowed (9) and points allowed (37). The Bears reached the third round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament before falling in penalty kicks to eventual champion North Carolina.

Two local Portland State girls and one from Baylor. Not bad. All three players trained with the Thorns during the preseason so they should have at least some team chemistry.

There's no telling what will happen to them once the national teamers come back, but my guess is that they'll return to their normal lives shortly after.
