The Portland Thorns FC are taking on the Washington Spirit this evening in a battle that could see the Thorns really run away with the season. You see, due to the Western New York Flash beating Sky Blue FC earlier this week, there's no possible way for the Thorns to be thrown down from their current place on top. At most, FC Kansas City or the Boston Breakers can simply join them with 7 points. A win tonight, however, would put them a good deal in the lead. Either way, the Thorns have definitely got themselves into a good situation.

Final Thoughts

There's not a whole lot of pressure on the Thorns this evening, as I already pointed out above, but that doesn't mean they should seize the opportunity. They are clearly making a strong case for themselves as being the best team in the league. While it's still early on in the season, three more points would effectively lock them in as the frontrunners for at least a couple weeks.
