The Portland Thorns managed to retain their top spot in the NWSL standings tonight with a convincing 2-1 win over the Washington Spirit. The first goal came very early in the game by way of a Alex Morgan penalty kick. The star striker slotted it into the net with ease. The second goal came in the 51st minute care of Nikki Washington who took a shot from outside the box. The goal squeaked into the bottom right corner.
Despite some minor technical difficulties, tonight's match was a much better affair for the NWSL. The stream, while not in HD, was relatively stable and the match itself was a sellout of 5,011 at the Maryland Soccerplex (where the Spirit play).
The win tonight sees the Thorns retain their top spot in the league with 10 points. That puts them 3 points clear of the Boston Breakers who won earlier today and have 7 points. The Thorns, along with Boston and FC Kansas City, remain undefeated so far this season.
