Portland Thorns FC vs. Seattle Reign Match Thread [2:00 pm]

The Portland Thorns take on the Seattle Reign once again, this time, however, without their star players.

The Portland Thorns host their northern rivals once again. During the last game the Thorns played the Seattle Reign, the northern side managed to keep the game scoreless until a controversial penalty kick was awarded to the Thorns. Prior to that, a depleted Reign side was able to hassle the Thorns at home throughout the match. Today, the Thorns will be forced to play against a side they've struggled with consistently this season without their best players. If the Thorns want three points today, they're going to have to fight for them.

Final Thoughts

The Thorns are still tied for first place with Sky Blue FC which gives them an opportunity today to take the lead once again. That said, I would argue that today is a bigger opportunity for some otherwise bench or fringe players to show that the Thorns don't necessarily need the likes of Christine Sinclair, Alex Morgan or Rachel Buehler to win games. Winning today, I think, would send a huge message to the other teams in the league that the Thorns are competitive always, not just when the stars are available.
