Tonight the Portland Timbers take on FC Dallas in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. While the Timbers are not quite at the finish line yet, their 2013 Open Cup run has been much better than either their 2011 or 2012 runs. In 2011 the team failed to even qualify for the tournament -- they lost 1-nil to the San Jose Earthquakes in a play-in game -- and in 2012, well, I'd rather not discuss that. Despite the relative success so far this tournament, however if the Timbers want to increase their chances of winning the Cup, they'll need to best FC Dallas away from home. Not an easy feat.

Final Thoughts
The Timbers have had a busy June schedule and no doubt some of the guys are exhausted. However, the good news for the Timbers is that they have a bye week this weekend. That should allow most of them to recover. FC Dallas, on the other hand, have to be right back in regular season action this weekend. There's no doubt in my mind that the relative exhaustion of each team will factor into this game, but by how much? I can't say.
