The Portland Thorns traveled to Kansas City to take on FCKC in order to bring home a needed three points. Unfortunately, a first half stunner by Lauren Cheney and a second half goal by FCKC's Mathias successfully muted the Thorns' chance at bringing home three points.
The game got off to a rough start for the Thorns. In fact, for the first 15 or so minutes, FC Kansas City completely dominated the game. It took quite a while for the Thorns to muster up some sort of attack and, even then, most attempts were easily blocked or biffed by the Thorns attackers. While the game might be considered a forgetful one for Thorns fans, for fans of FCKC, the first half goal by Lauren Cheney will probably go down as one of the best goals scored so far this season.
One more thing to note is Marian Dougherty's injury in the second half. While we don't have an official word yet on what's wrong exactly, it came at a very inopportune time for the Thorns as head coach Parlow-Cone just used the Thorns final substitution. Her injury essentially handicapped the Thorns at 10 players for the remaining 15-20 minutes.
All in all the Portland Thorns will need to push passed this result and look to the next if they want to keep their championship dreams alive.
The Portland Thorns next play the Boston Breakers at home July 6th.
What did you think of the Thorns performance against FC Kansas City?
