Gold Cup: USA Handily Defeats Belize 6-1 in Gold Cup Opener

Team USA played their first match today against Belize in a 6-1 drubbing.

Everybody suspected that tonight's game was going to go well for the USMNT. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann brought on a talented, but also eager-to-prove-themselves group of national teamers. Landon Donovan, of course, highlighted the roster though other such as Mixx Diskerud and Chris Wondolowski didn't go entirely unnoticed. In the end the game couldn't have gone better for the Nats as they topped Belize 6-1.

The first three goals came by way of Chris Wondolowski, all in the first half. Interestingly enough, Wondo practically disappeared from the second half. I think I noticed him once or twice throughout. Still, you can argue with the man's ability to find himself in the right place at the right time. It might not be working out so well for the San Jose Earthquakes this year, but he's clearly still valuable to the USMNT.

Stuart Holden, fresh from being subbed on at the half for Kyle Beckerman was able to tally his first USA goal in a long time in the 58th minute. Then in the 72nd minute Michael Orozco Fiscal managed to tally one of his own, followed, in quick succession, by a penalty kick goal care of Landon Donovan.

It wasn't all bad for Belize, however. In the first 25 minutes they held strong defensively and even managed to pull one back after Wondo's second in the 40th minute. Clearly, however, they just weren't up to the challenge of taking on the USMNT.

In other Gold Cup news, Costa Rica beat Cuba 3-nil just before tonight's Belize - USA game. Rodney Wallace did actually start in the match, but wasn't able to contribute before being subbed out in the second half.

The USMNT next travels to Salt Lake City to play Cuba this Saturday.
