The Portland Timbers went to Seattle and knew they needed to score early to have a chance at a result. They had their opportunities early in the half with a good header on frame by Jack Jewsbury which was cleared off the line. A 1v1 created by a perfect ball from Diego Valeri but squandered by Ryan Johnson. The last major chance was a shot at the top of the box that hit the woodwork and bounced out instead of into the goal by Valeri.
The second half was a different story. Seattle was able to bring depth on and take out Shalrie Joseph who had been abused by Valeri and Darlington Nagbe. Once Mauro Rosales came on Seattle was able to win the battle of the midfield the field tilted towards Portland's goal. Once again the goal Portland gave up came courtesy of a set-piece, which is about the only way Portland gives up goals.
