Portland Timbers' State of the Roster

With tomorrow's final two rounds of the MLS draft the Portland Timbers' roster is almost set for training camp.

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Last off season the Portland Timbers were one of the busiest teams in the league and they needed to be after the season they had. This season it was less about rebuilding and more about retooling, which fits the mantra "If it aint broke don't fix it!"

Here is what the roster currently looks like:

# POS Player Name Age HT WT Birthplace
11 M Kalif Alhassan 23 5' 10" 160 Ghana
21 M Diego Chara 27 5' 8" 150 Colombia
98 D Mamadou "Futty" Danso 30 6' 3" 185 The Gambia
15 M Steven Evans 22 6' 1" 180 United States
F Gastón Fernández 30 5' 7" Argentina
D Bryan Gallego 20 5' 10" 165 United States
90 GK Jake Gleeson 23 6' 3" 200 New Zealand
5 D Michael Harrington 27 6' 170 United States
13 M Jack Jewsbury 32 6' 185 United States
4 M Will Johnson 26 5' 10" 160 Canada
44 D Pa Modou Kah 33 6' 1" 175 The Gambia
31 D Rauwshan McKenzie 27 6' 1" 185 United States
6 F/M Darlington Nagbe 23 5' 9" 165 Liberia
17 M Michael Nanchoff 25 5' 8" 150 United States
D Norberto Paparatto 30 6' 3" 180 Argentina
10 F Frederic Piquionne 35 6' 2" 170 New Caledonia
23 D Alvas Powell 19 6' 165 Jamaica
1 GK Donovan Ricketts 36 6' 4" 210 Jamaica
27 D Mikael Silvestre 36 6' 190 France
37 F Maximiliano Urruti 22 6' 165 Argentina
8 M Diego Valeri 27 5' 10" 165 Argentina
M Jorge Villafaña 24 5' 9" 150 United States
22 D/M Rodney Wallace 25 6' 165 Costa Rica
GK Andrew Weber 30 6' 2" 190 United States
M Steve Zakuani 25 6' 160 Republic of Congo
14 M Ben Zemanski 25 5' 11" 150 United States

Draft Picks

F Schillo Tshuma 21 5' 10" 162 Zimbabwe
D Taylor Peay 22 6' 2" 180 United States
M Aaron Long 21 6' 1" 173 United States

On Loan

20 F Jose Valencia 22 6' 1" 180 Colombia

Hold the Rights to

9 F Ryan Johnson 29 6' 1" 180 Jamaica
30 GK Milos Kocic 28 6' 4" 200 Serbia
18 M/D Brad Ring 26 5' 10" 165 United States

If all three draft picks make the roster this would put the Portland Timbers at 29 roster spots. MLS rosters cap at 30 and this means there is one roster spot open (remember loaned players do not count as a roster spot) for a possible new signing. However, if Portland does not fill that roster spot they can use the $35,000 in allocation money they get by living that spot open. It also means that Brad, RJ and Milos would not be on the roster even but Portland would retain their rights if anyone else would like to sign them.

Here are the current numbers in each position:

Goalkeepers: 3

Defenders: 10

Midfield: 12

Forwards: 4

International Roster Spots

Currently the Portland Timbers have 8 international spots and as of last year they were using all 8. However with the loss of Kocic and the loan of Valencia opened up 2 roster spots which was filled by the signing of the two Argentines. This leaves 6 other players on the list and they are Alhassan, Piquionne Valeri, Kah, Urruti, Silvestre. There have been hints that due to the length of time spent in the US Alhassan will be receiving or already has received his green card.  Thus opening up one more spot for the signing of Tshuma which would then put Portland back up to 8 international signings.
