Portland Timbers Man of the Match: First Blood

New, comments

Who was the Timbers' top performer against the Earthquakes?

Steve Dykes-USA TODAY Sports

The Portland Timbers defeated half of the San Jose Earthquakes 3-0 last night in an effort that saw strong performances all across the pitch. So, who is deserving of the most recognition in this comprehensive victory? Here are our picks.

Kevin: Rodney Wallace

The first half was the Wallace show and fittingly he was the one to draw first blood. And he continued to impress in the second half as well. But Valeri had a brace and was just downright amazing after a week of rest so I'm still giving him honorable mention :)

Ryan: Diego Valeri

The difference in Portland's offense was evident when you compare the last two games with and without Valeri. His ability to hit the pass that needs to be hit and to step up when Portland needs him is what makes him the man of the match for this game and Portland's MVP for the season

Will: Diego Valeri

Another week and another great performance from the Maestro. Two goals is always nice, but the ease with which Valeri worked the ball around and through the San Jose defense showed, for the 31st time this year, that he is a step above.

Chis: Diego Chara

Is it possible he has better chemistry with Ben Zemanski than Will Johnson? No. But Zemanski's sitting tendencies have given Chara a little bit more freedom both in attack and as a ball-winner defensively. He took advantage on Wednesday; terrorizing an overmatched Quakes midfield all night.
