Portland Timbers to Pick 12th in Chivas USA Dispersal Draft

Lots were drawn this morning and, as we all should have expected, the Timbers are nowhere near the top of the order.

Jaime Valdez-USA TODAY Sports

Major League Soccer held a drawing of lots this morning to determine the order of November 19th's Dispersal Draft for Chivas USA. With non-playoff teams getting two envelopes in the drawing and playoff teams getting only one, the Portland Timbers were picked 12th, behind five playoff teams and both expansion clubs.

So, what will be left for the Timbers at the 12th pick? Frankly, not much. With a pick that late in the game, the most the Timbers can hope for is an under appreciated talent that gets passed over by teams already carrying a full roster and without the cap space to add a player.

There will certainly be some movement of players surrounding the draft, particularly with the top pick, and presumably the contract of coveted keeper Dan Kennedy, falling to FC Dallas. Dallas already have two keepers on their roster who have shown themselves to be top quality in Chris Seitz and Raul Fernandez.

Looking at the players that might be available to the Timbers now, the Dispersal Draft guide put together by the Goat Parade earlier in the month is still a good read.

Of course, Timbers fans can take some solace in the fact that the Seattle Sounders and Vancouver Whitecaps were picked 19th and 20th, respectively.

What player do you think will fall to the Timbers? Will the team make any pick at all?

Using an envelope method, the MLS clubs that qualified for the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs presented by AT&T were given one envelope, while all non-playoff teams, along with 2015 expansion teams New York City FC and Orlando City SC, were awarded two envelopes. The draft picks drawn today are final and cannot be traded between clubs.

The 2014 MLS Dispersal Draft will be conducted via teleconference with representatives from all 20 MLS clubs. Each club will determine a selection in the order above and the draft will conclude when every team forgoes a selection. MLS clubs that acquire a Dispersal Draft player must take them at their full 2015 budget charges and exercise their option. If clubs leave selected players unprotected in advance of the Expansion Draft, which will be held on Dec. 10, they will be made available for selection by New York City FC and Orlando City SC on that date.

Former Chivas USA players that are not taken in the Dispersal Draft will take part in the Re-Entry Draft, if eligible, or will be made available in the Waiver Draft on Dec. 10.
