Portland Timbers Man of the Match: Nothing Overwhelming

New, 52 comments

The Timbers couldn't get the win, but somebody is getting voted the Man of the Match.

Steve Dykes-USA TODAY Sports

After holding the LA Galaxy scoreless for 92'. the Portland Timbers' defense finally cracked giving up an unfortunate goal to a free Robbie Keane header. Three minutes later, the Timbers stormed back and grabbed a goal of their own. Looking for a Man of the Match performance from yesterday's game, which is more important? Standing strong for most of the game, or getting one over on the opponent for a single moment?

Here are our picks for the Timbers' Man of the Match. Let us know who you chose by voting in the poll below.

Michael: Donovan Ricketts

I guess. Nothing particularly overwhelming for me, but Ricketts did make some good saves, despite the weird Robbie Keane goal in injury time.

Kelly: Diego Valeri

I hate just going with the goalscorer, but with a lack of standout performances, I'll give the nod to Valeri.

Kevin: Diego Valeri

To be honest I only got to watch the second half. And I was almost going to say "our defense" for the MOTM until we got caught ball watching....again. But Valeri rescued a point in the dying seconds and that is going to be MOTM for me.

Stacey: Jack Jewsbury

Diego Valeri was my first thought, but since a couple of my fellow writers picked him already, I'll give a nod to the club captain. Jewsbury played well in spite of getting pushed out of position after Michael Harrington had to be subbed off. His defense was solid and while he understandably hung back a little bit more against such a strong counterattacking team, he did get forward a couple times to put nice low crosses into the box, which the Timbers might have made something of on a better day.

Ryan: Darlington Nagbe

Nagbe did just about everything in that match. He was 26 of 33 in passing, had 2 key passes, 1 shot on target, a sweet through ball, 2 blocked shots, and 6 recoveries (with one being the game saver).

Will: Donovan Ricketts

Let's get this out of the way; Ricketts could have potentially done more on the Timbers concession. However, without three superior saves from the Iron Lion of Zion, the Timbers would have already been down and out of this one. His stop on Robbie Keane's dipping, deflected shot from outside the box was particularly impressive after being burned by a similar shot last week against D.C. United.
