The Portland Thorns once again jumped out to an early lead in the 8th minute and it was Stephanie Catley providing the assist. Catley played a long ball from midfield behind the Washington Spirit defense and Alex Morgan was able to beat two defenders to the ball. With the defenders one either side of her and the goalie closing quickly she hit a chip shot for the games opening goal.
For the rest of the half Portland looked dangerous at times and even created a few goal scoring opportunities but none of them went into the back of the net. Portland's defense also played well as they limited the Spirit to long shots or set pieces. When the half ended Portland went into the break up one goal and looking dangerous going forward.
The second half started out well for the Thorns but as the time creeped upwards the Spirit started to look better and better. In the 62nd minute Portland's high line gave up a 1v1 with Nadine Angerer. Jodie Taylor rounded a diving Angerer and even though she had a very tough angle she hit the ball over a recovering Emily Menges and into the back of the net.
Smelling blood the Spirit continued to press for the game winner but Portland held on for the point on the road. The tie keeps Portland just ahead of the Spirit in the standings and in the race for a playoff spot.
