The Portland Timbers managed some good performances book-ended by moments of disastrous defending in their 2-2 draw against the LA Galaxy. So who were the big performers for the Timbers on Friday? We made our picks for the Timbers' Man of the Match and shared them below; make yours and share them in the comments and poll at the bottom of the page.
Stacey: Jorge Villafana
Can a player get an assist on his own goal? Since both Timbers goals came off rebounds, Villafaña will unfortunately not get official credit for the fact that he set up both of them, though he will get credit for finishing one. In addition to being one of the best men in the attack for the Timbers, Villafaña was probably as good as I've ever seen him on defense, and he pulled that off against an attack that can be a real handful.
Kevin: Diego Valeri
It's not hard to give Villafaña credit for being good defensively. He was the only defender who I thought had a good game over all. But my MOTM goes to Valeri. He did really well out wide. He and Fernandez linked up fantastically and hopefully this is a setup that porter continues to get Fernandez on the pitch more. He was dangerous all night and got a goal for his efforts. He even got Bruce arena to say "play better" in response to a question on how to deal with him.
Kelly: Jorge Villafana
He's sort of become the 2014 Harrington. He's come to Portland and resurrected his carrier under Porter with consistency, solid defense, good service, and an occasional goal. Last night we got to see all four.
Will: Jorge Villafana
Not only was Villafana the Timbers' most consistent defender on the night, it was also his consistent work on the flank and consistent crossing into the box that led to both Timbers' goals. The fact that he was able to follow his cross into the box and score one of those goals was the icing on the cake for Villafana's performance.
