Portland Timbers Man of the Match: The Guessing Game

New, comments

The Timbers did poorly in LA and we do poorly at picking a Man of the Match.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Across the board the Portland Timbers did not impress in their 3-1 loss to the LA Galaxy on Saturday morning. The Timbers may not have been blown out on the score sheet, but it felt like it at times as the Galaxy, arguably MLS's hottest team right now, took them apart.

In the aftermath of the match, it was hard to point to any one player having a truly positive influence on the game and it showed in our picks. Diego Valeri was the go-to guy thanks to his free kick goal in the 14', but nobody seemed to be able to really muster any cohesive thoughts about the experience.

Since the picks this week were pretty lackluster, let's play a game. I will list each of the picks out and you try to match them to the contributors who submitted them. (Pick from: Kelly, Kevin, Michael, Ryan, Stacey, Will)

  1. "Valeri? Is that the right answer? Anyone? Anyone?"
  2. "I wanted to go with Darlington Nagbe since it was pretty obvious that his absence greatly affected the team's...everything. That was too much of a cop-out, though, so I went with the lesser cop-out and picked the goalscorer."
  3. "The goal was great."
  4. "Uh...yup. Valeri."
  5. "I really want to come up with a different pick, but Valeri is the only player for whom I feel the good (his goal and the chances he created on offense) outweighed the bad (frequently slacking off on defensive duties)."
  6. "Valeri only because he scored for the third time in as many games from 18+ yards. "

Anyway, can you come up with a real rational for naming someone the Man of the Match? Let us know in the comments and take a moment to vote in the poll below.
