The Portland Timbers got a big two goal win over the CONCACAF Champions League group rivals, CD Olimpia, yesterday and they had several big performances to get there. Maximiliano Urruti put up two goals on the night, Will Johnson had a goal and two assists, and plenty of others around the pitch put in solid efforts as well, even if their numbers were not so immediately impressive.
Here are our picks for the Timbers' Man of the Match. Make sure to share yours in the comments and vote in the poll below.
Michael: Maximiliano Urruti
Ok #GOALZ is an easy argument to make, and to be fair he deserved his second and third CCL tallies, but Urruti is so much more than just the goals he scores, especially in this competition. His buzzing around the field gave Olimpia defenders (and the goalkeeper) fits and he linked up very well with Gaston Fernandez all night. This might have been his best performance with the Timbers.
Ryan: Maximiliano Urruti
Urruti just seems to score when he is given the chance to play extended minutes and tonight was no different. His runs off the ball helped ensure he scored at least one and his hustle nabbed the other one.
Stacey: Will Johnson
This might have been the captain's best game of the year. He had a sort of frenetic energy on the field, but he channeled it effectively, buzzing around Olimpia's midfielders and breaking up their plays. It was high pressure from him that gave Urruti the ball in a position to score the first goal, and Johnson's goal was a beauty as well, but the shining moment of his game may have been the incredible pass to Urruti for his second goal. Wow.
Will: Maximiliano Urruti
Urruti may have scored twice, but it was his hold up play, continuous pressuring of the defense, and fantastic interplay with Gaston Fernandez that make his the man of the match in my mind. Although his ludicrous touch on his second goal did not hurt his cause.
Fernandez should also get a mention for his hard work keeping up the pressure on the Olimpia defense, solid hold up play, and creative passing.
Kevin: Maximiliano Urruti
It's a hard choice between Will Johnson and Max Urruti. Both had excellent games last night. Both were vital in the high pressure all over the field to get us the 3 points we needed. Will had 2 assists and a golazo and Urruti snagged a brace. But I'm going to give to Max Urruti (perhaps for his new player chant which is amazing and I love it).
