The Portland Timbers' rampant attacking display against the San Jose Earthquakes may have been tempered by a lack of finishing and some frustrating defensive play, but the Timbers still put in a heck of a shift going forward. It will be hard to justify going with anyone other than the Argentine Maestro, Diego Valeri, for the Match of the Match, but if you have got somebody else who deserves the honor, vote in the poll below and let us know why in the comments.
Kevin: Diego Valeri
For me it was Valeri. His two assists and beautiful play all game long was enough to secure my vote.
Michael: Diego Valeri
I like to be contrarian in this space but not this week. Best player on the field by a mile.
Ryan: Diego Valeri
Portland's season would be even more in the dumps if Diego Valeri was not en fuego. Valeri had a hand in all three goals.
Stacey: Diego Valeri
Caleb Porter hit the nail on the head; Valeri was a man among boys yesterday. It was pretty incredible watching him drag his team back into a game that looked like it had gotten away from them. Many thanks to him for saving us from a home loss to the San Jose.
Will: Diego Valeri
Three assists, nine more key passes. Those are crazy numbers. That Valeri did not end up with twice as many assists is a testament to how off the Timbers' finishing was on the night. As long as the Timbers have Valeri at the heart of their attack, they will have chances.
Honorable mention goes to Diego Chara, who was once again a ball-winning machine in the midfield.
There are our picks, now what are yours? Let us know by voting in the poll and tell us why, or just fawn over Valeri, in the comments below.
