After a Women's World Cup break the NWSL kicks off again with the Portland Thorns hosting FC Kansas City. Portland will hope the long lay off reenergized a team that looked like they were dragging their feet the last few games. After a rocky start to their season Kansas City had a good first part of May before ending the month before the break on a three match winless streak.
Preview Article: The Thorns come into the match winless since their 1-0 victory over the Western New York Flash back on April 18. In the six games since, Portland has earned three draws and three losses, collecting three of 18 points and dropping from the top of the league to eighth spot, one point behind seventh place Kansas City. The Thorns have mustered one goal in their last four games and some would say the league break couldn't have come at a better time for a struggling team. Facing the defending champions in the first match back could also be just the balance of motivation and confidence building challenge Portland needs to make a push back up the table. Despite a lackluster offense and difficult results, Portland can look back to their most recent hosting of Kansas City for inspiration. On July 13, 2014, the Thorns lit up Providence Park for their greatest victory ever in a 7-1 win over their Kansas City rivals. The match still stands as the most goals scored by the Thorns in a single match and the largest margin of victory in an NWSL match.
