Hey, remember that time on Saturday that Vancouver Whitecaps forward Cristian Techera stomped on the ankle of Diego Chara in such a manner that is was super obvious and clearly intentional? Well, referee Juan Guzman might not -- he only whistled a foul on the play -- but the MLS Disciplinary Committee sure does and they handed down a one game suspension for Techera today because of it.
Techera, suspended and fined for "violent conduct that endangered the safety of an opponent", will miss the Whitecaps upcoming match against the San Jose Earthquakes this Sunday.
The stomp on Chara was at the root of the post-game scrum that saw Will Johnson eventually given a yellow card then a straight red card by Guzman as players from both teams swarmed the referee.
Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter told the press earlier this week that the team would not be appealing Johnson's red card.
As a result of the post-game shenanigans from both sides, both the Timbers and the Whitecaps were fined for violating the league's mass confrontation policy. This marks the Timbers' first fine of 2015 under the policy.
