Portland Thorns FC fell on the road Wednesday night after two quick-fire goals in the second half set FC Kansas City off to a 3-0 win. With the result, Kansas City moves up to third, while Portland are in sole possession of fifth place, three points off fourth place Washington Spirit.
FC Kansas City scored two goals in quick succession in the 60th and 65th minutes to open the scoring. Mandy Laddish tallied the opener and Amy Rodriguez registered the second soon after. Erika Tymrak sealed the win in the 76th minute with a low shot that slipped just under goalkeeper Michelle Betos.
Portland lost midfielder Sinead Farrelly midway through the first half after she took a close range shot to the side of her head. Forward Jodie Taylor was a late scratch from the starting lineup, replaced by Mana Shim. The result is Portland’s second-straight loss when visiting Kansas City and snaps a three-game winning streak for the Thorns.
Portland is still in the race for the 2015 playoffs and got some help through a last-minute equalizer from the Western New York Flash who drew 1-1 with the Washington Spirit earlier in the day. Portland are just three points behind Washington and Kansas City and host the Spirit in their final home match on Aug. 30 at Providence Park before concluding the regular season on the road against the Flash. Portland now faces a 10-day rest period before traveling to New Jersey to face Sky Blue FC on Aug. 22.
