The Portland Timbers went on the road for the first time this season and on the waterlogged pitch came away with nothing for their efforts. Here are our picks for Man of the Match.
Will Conwell - Diego Chara
When in doubt for the Timbers' Man of the Match, go with Chara. There were few standouts in this one, but Chara was definitely one of them, popping up all over the pitch to win balls, provide outlets, and even bomb on into the San Jose box from time to time, providing one of the Timbers' two shots off the post despite his deep-lying position.
Kevin McCamish - Nat Borchers
I'm going to stick with what I said on the live broadcast and post match roundup that I did with Portland Timbros.
Nat Borchers. And I'm giving it to him for the passion and desire he showed in the final minutes trying to get a goal and a point for his team.
Chris Rifer - Darlington Nagbe
Among the Timbers' problems on Sunday was certainly not their central buildup, as Portland repeatedly cracked open the Quakes right down the middle. Although the turf got the better of Nagbe in an inopportune moment once, the Timbers' eight was putting San Jose defenders on skates throughout much of the afternoon.
Ryan Gates - Fanendo Adi
Adi's has taken great strides in becoming a forward who can thrive in a multitude of ways and it showed against San Jose. Numerous times he was able to post up and receieve a ball and lay it off to his teammates. He was also smart in his decisions on the break which lead to a couple of chances.
