MLS Week 6 Open Thread: The Rocky Mountain Rivalry

The Portland Timbers once again do not play until the late game on Sunday this weekend, so here is your (late arriving) run down of all the matches being played this weekend in MLS. The highlight here has to be the Rocky Mountain Cup clash between Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids as two teams that genuinely dislike each other try to overcome the stigma of an MLS manufactured -- or at least encouraged -- rivalry.

Friday

Philadelphia Union vs. Orlando City SC

Watch it on: Replay available on MLS Live

Kickoff: Already happened.

One sentence preview review: Holy crap, did you see that free kick?

Saturday

Montreal Impact vs. Columbus Crew SC

Watch it on: MLS Live

Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. PT at Stade Saputo in Montreal, QC

One sentence preview: The still-sputtering Crew are winless through four and coming up against one of the East's elite in Montreal.

New England Revolution vs. Toronto FC

Watch it on: MLS Live

Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. PT at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA

One sentence preview: This is Toronto's fifth straight road game and the pitch at Gillette will not be friendly to them; neither will the Revs, who are still trying to find their form despite a controversial win last week over the Red Bulls.

D.C. United vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

Watch it on: MLS Live

Kickoff: 2:30 p.m. PT at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

One sentence preview: Cross country flights are never easy, especially when your attack is seriously struggling; of course, D.C. are winless in five so now is the time for the Whitecaps to remember how to score (without help from the ref).

New York Red Bulls vs. Sporting Kansas City

Watch it on: MLS Live

Kickoff: 4:00 p.m. PT at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ

One sentence preview: The Red Bulls have scored four goals in four games and all four came in the same match; playing at home might help, but Sporting Kansas City looks good and New York does not.

FC Dallas vs. San Jose Earthquakes

Watch it on: MLS Live

Kickoff: 6:00 p.m. PT at Toyota Park in Frisco, TX

One sentence preview: Dallas is a scary team and San Jose is a competent one, but with Mauro Diaz likely out the Quakes have every chance of coming home with a point from this one.

Real Salt Lake vs. Colorado Rapids

Watch it on: MLS Live

Kickoff: 6:30 p.m. PT at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, UT

One sentence preview: The Rocky Mountain Cup, played annually for a bronzed clipping from Kyle Beckerman's dreadlocks, should prove interesting as the defensive prowess of the Rapids meets the multifaceted attack of RSL.

Sunday

Houston Dynamo vs. Seattle Sounders

Watch it on: ESPN

Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. PT at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, TX

One sentence preview: After scoring at a breakneck pace to open the season, the well suddenly dried up for the Dynamo in their last game; hopefully they can dig deep and keep Seattle below the Timbers on the MLS table.

New York City FC vs. Chicago Fire

Watch it on: FOX Sports 1

Kickoff: 4:00 p.m. PT at Yankee Stadium in New York City, NY

One sentence preview: This match between two improving teams is probably worth watching just for Tommy McNamara and his flowing locks.
