Portland Thorns FC continued a streak that goes back to their inaugural season of going unbeaten in their opening four matches after their Saturday afternoon match against the Washington Spirit ended scoreless. Spirit forward Crystal Dunn hit the woodwork in the dying minutes and Thorns midfielder Tobin Heath was sent off in the second half.
Dunn came closest to breaking the deadlock in second half stoppage time, but her shot from the top of the Thorns box struck the post and went out for a goal kick.
Heath received her marching orders in the 88th minute for a second yellow card, earned for apparent dissent after throwing the ball after being called for a foul. Heath will miss Portland’s next match on the road at Seattle next Saturday.
The match saw a team in the Spirit that had outscored opponents 3-0 in the first half of games this season matched up against a team that outscored opponents 3-0 in the second half of games. Neither team could find the break through though, as the 0-0 scoreline at halftime lasted to the final whistle.
With the result, Portland ends the Spirit's three-game win streak and still holds the advantage head-to-head against the D.C. club having only lost one encounter.
Portland will finish up their run of four-straight road matches next Saturday as they return to the west coast to face Seattle Reign FC at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (Pacific).
