Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes in the U.S. Open Cup: How to Watch, Preview, Match Chat [7:30]

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

The U.S. Open Cup is back and once again the Portland Timbers are one of only two MLS sides facing off against top-level competition; the only other team that can say that is the Timbers' opponents on the night, the San Jose Earthquakes.

With the teams set to face off for the second time in as many weeks, there should be plenty of hard feelings in this traditionally hard-fought match up, particularly following a second half red-card for winger Dairon Asprilla as the Timbers held on for a 1-0 win, their first shut out of the season. Expect both teams to go for it in this single-elimination match.

Match Preview

"Additionally, the Timbers will almost certainly play Dairon Asprilla out on the wing as he is suspended for Saturday's match against RSL. Who will be paired up with the young Colombian, however, remains in question. Lucas Melano or Jack Barmby are both strong possibilities, as is Grabavoy if he is not included in the Timbers' central trio, but even players like T2's Kharlton Belmar are a possibility out wide with the Timbers' currently unsettled situation on the flanks."
