There are always trades aplenty on draft day and this year the Portland Timbers got in on the action, trading $100,000 in general allocation money, the No. 10 pick, and an international slot for the Houston Dynamo’s No. 4 pick, which they promptly used to select 19 year old Generation Adidas forward Jeremy Ebobisse out of Duke University.
Ebobisse was long thought of as one of the top prospects in the draft and has been near the top of most mock drafts coming into today. That he fell to the No. 4 slot is a surprise and the Timbers suddenly find themselves with a surplus of forwards with Ebobisse and McInerney both jockeying for playing time behind Fanendo Adi.
Ebobisse made his reputation with Duke and the USMNT U-20s, and spent most of 2016 training with the Charleston Battery. Although he has not played a huge number of games in the last year, Ebobisse came out and confirmed his quality in the combine, scoring a well-struck goal in his only appearance.
