The Portland Timbers take on the LA Galaxy tonight in their final match of the 2017 preseason. This will be the Timbers’ last chance to fine-tune their tactics before Friday’s season opener against Minnesota United.
In this match, the Timbers will feature a full-strength lineup against a Galaxy side that is depleted by injuries, but still features a number of dangerous players and perhaps the most dangerous midfield group of any team the Timbers have seen this season.
Previews
Match Preview: “In the attack the focus should be on getting production from across the pitch and creating chances from all angles of approach. If the Timbers can run the attack through Darlington Nagbe, Diego Valeri, and Sebastian Blanco, they will be better prepared to exploit opposition defenses in a variety of ways, rather than in the somewhat lopsided way that the Timbers were forced into in 2016 by the presence of Lucas Melano.”
Preview Interview: “The fanbase is divided on the hiring of Curt Onalfo, with opinions ranging from cautious optimism to doom and gloom, but the move is nonetheless a breath of fresh air. The atmosphere at training has changed: Curt doesn't run quite as tight a ship as Bruce, however the players seem to be more relaxed and at ease. Defining LA's style of play will require more viewings, as we just haven't seen a lot of the Galaxy offense so far.”
