Sonnett, Horan Called up for SheBelieves Cup

The Thorns’ Emily Sonnett and Lindsey Horan are on the preliminary roster for the 2018 SheBelieves Cup, the third annual iteration of the tournament pitting the USWNT against France, Germany, and England.

Two is a record low for number of Thorns in the tournament; last year’s featured five in Sonnett, Horan, Tobin Heath, Allie Long, and Amandine Henry. Heath was ruled out of this year’s tournament as she’s still recovering from ankle surgery, while Henry went back to Lyon at the close of the 2017 season. Long now plays for the Seattle Reign.

Sonnett subbed on for Taylor Smith in the US’s January friendly against Denmark, the first minutes she’d gotten with the national team since October 2016—despite flying back to the states from Australia for the Canada friendlies last November.

On a media conference call this morning, Jill Ellis confirmed Adrianna Franch was omitted from the roster due to injury.

The worst-named tournament in American soccer will kick off at MAPFRE stadium in Columbus on March 1, with the England/France match at 1 p.m. PT, followed by USA/Germany at 4 p.m. All three USA matches will be televised on ESPN networks.
