The Portland Timbers’ preseason continues this evening as they face off against their arch-rivals, the Seattle Sounders.
After finishing behind the Timbers in the regular season by the narrowest of margins, the Sounders went on to appear in their second straight MLS Cup Final, this time losing to Toronto FC while the Timbers succumbed to their injury issues and flamed out in the early rounds of the playoffs.
Both teams return this year with their lineups largely intact, but today’s match marks the first taste of the Cascadia rivalry for new Timbers head coach Giovanni Saravese, as well as for all the new players on both sides. That should not lessen the impact of the match between two extremely competitive sides and all of the newcomers should come away with a good idea of exactly what the Cascadia rivalry means.
