After defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 on Wednesday night, the Timbers have advanced to the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This is the fifth time in the last six seasons that the Timbers have moved on to the Round of 16.
Since joining MLS, the Timbers are 8-6 in Open Cup play. Their deepest run in the competition came in 2013; ending in a loss to Real Salt Lake in the semi-finals.
The LA Galaxy will be the Timbers next opponents in this year’s Cup. They advanced with a 3-1 defeat of PDL side FC Golden State Force on Wednesday night. The Timbers and Galaxy have already met twice this season, once in the season opener, a 2-1 loss for PTFC, and a recent 1-1 tie at Providence Park.
The match will be played on Friday, June 15th at 8pm. Tickets will go on sale Monday, June 11th at noon pacific time. Just like the match against San Jose, the east side stands will be closed because of construction.
For those of you who can’t make the match, it will be streamed on timbers.com.
