The Portland Timbers are still in the Twin Cities and are set to, for the second time in four days, face off against Minnesota United. This time the two sides will be battle not for three points on the league table, but for a berth in the final of the U.S. Open Cup.
Neither side has any chance at hosting the final thanks to a draw held several weeks ago, but whoever wins tonight’s match will head across the country to take on Atlanta United on Tuesday, August 27th.
With the Timbers and Loons having just faced off in league play, there will be few surprises to be had for either side. Designated player Darwin Quintero — who was suspended for Sunday’s league match — should be available for Minnesota, but unless injury of fitness becomes an issue it seems unlikely that we will see too many changes to either side.
Preview
Storylines: “On Sunday, the Timbers couldn’t get much going on offense. Other than Sebastian Blanco popping up all over the place and creating some of the team’s best chances, a majority of the players were just unable to get too involved, especially in the buildup.”
