Felipe Mora and Andy Polo have been called up by their respective countries for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, the Portland Timbers announced on Tuesday. Mora has been called up by the Chilean national team and will be partake in a pair of matches against Peru and Venezuela on Nov. 13 and Nov. 17. Polo will play for Peru and will play Mora’s Chilean team as well as Argentina, also on Nov. 13 and Nov. 17 respectively.
Polo has been a steady presence throughout 2020 for Portland, appearing in 20 matches (seven starts) across all competitions. He has two goals and two assists this year, including the game-winner in the MLS is Back Tournament.
Losing Polo isn’t ideal, but losing Mora might be more significant. The Chilean striker has been the lone striker available lately for Portland, with Jaroslaw Niezgoda tearing his ACL earlier this month and Jeremy Ebobisse battling a concussion for five straight matches. Mora has seven goals and two assists in 23 matches (13 starts).
