Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara was named to the 2020 MLS Best XI on Friday after yet another stellar season with the Portland Timbers. It is the first time Chara has earned the honor.
As per usual, Chara was a steady presence during a chaotic 2020. The 34-year-old midfielder appeared and started in 20 regular season games this year, playing the most minutes on the team (1,800). He led MLS in recoveries at 174 while also tallying a goal and a career-high six assists. He was also one of only three players this year to have multiple games (two) with two or more assists.
He was also named to the Best XI at the MLS is Back Tournament back in August. He was one of four players to earn the honor from the Timbers after helping lead them to the title. When combining that with his regular season, Chara has 24 games (24 starts) under his belt and 2,160 minutes played.
It’s been quite a career for Diego Chara. The Colombia native is Portland’s all-time leader in games played (282), games started (279) and minutes played (24,755). He leads all MLS players in games started (279), minutes played (24,755) and tackles won (735) since joining the Timbers in April of 2011. His 282 games is the most any player has played before being selected to the Best XI for the first time.
The Best XI recognizes the top players at each position and is chosen by media, players, and MLS club technical staff. You can see the full list here.
