In a move that was reported earlier this month but made official on Sunday, the Portland Timbers traded defender Julio Cascante to Austin FC in exchange for $250,000 in General Allocation Money.

The move is one of several that was reported at the beginning of this month, with Tom Bogert of MLSsoccer.com originally breaking the story. The 27-year-old defender joined Portland in 2018 from the Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa, making 51 appearances (41 starts) across all competitions for the Timbers. He scored two goals and tallied two assists during his time in Portland.

Quotes on the Cascante trade:

Gavin Wilkinson, president and general manager:

“On behalf of everyone in the club, I want to thank Julio for his professionalism and commitment. After several end of year meetings with the player, there was a collective opinion that he needed a new environment to fulfill his aspirations within the game and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”

Giovanni Savarese, head coach:

“Julio has been a competitive player ever since joining the Timbers and I believe this opportunity in Austin will be very good for his career. I wish him all the best moving forward.”
