The Portland Timbers emerge from Group F as the winners after fighting LAFC to a draw, and now it’s time for the Round of 16. The Timbers have looked increasingly better as this tournament has worn on, and I think they should be able to take care of FC Cincinnati, though the team from Ohio has looked good enough to emerge from their group as well.
The winner of tonight’s match has a date with New York City FC on August 1st. Some other good news from the tournament is that the Sounders fell last night to Los Angeles FC 4-1, and are out of the tournament. Look for the strongest lineup that Gio can put together, as a lot of players were rested against LAFC. The likes of Diego Valeri, Jeremy Ebobisse and more will most likely be a part of the starting XI.
Match Day Reading
“Our defense held strong, though. I want to be clear that, outside of those awful four minutes where we gave up two goals, the defense held strong against the most potent attack in MLS. We just weren’t able to tilt the playing field back in our favor. For the most part, it was one-way traffic. “
