The day has come. The final match of the NWSL Challenge Cup is here, with your Portland Thorns set to face off against the newly branded NY/NJ Gotham FC. It’s a battle of two teams that have shown just how dominant they can be throughout the tournament, and they’re coming to a head in an early showdown.

The Thorns have a chance to be the top NWSL team for the first time since ... well, technically last year when they won the Fall Series. But it’s the first time they’ll have a chance to raise a trophy above their heads since 2017, back when they took down the North Carolina Courage and were crowned the NWSL Champions.

I would say the Thorns have a good shot of coming out on top today. They’ve already faced the Houston Dash, a team who our own Grant Little described as the perfect warm-up for this final. They have another game at full strength together. Why shouldn’t the Thorns come out with a win? I see no reason. But soccer is a sport that often produces ludicrous results without reason, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
